The CISO Is Not James Bond: Why Business Outcomes Now Beat Technical Metrics

The image of the CISO as a superhero expected to stop every threat is fading. Boards now expect security leaders to enable AI adoption, cloud migration and business agility while continuously managing risk, said Debasish Jyotiprakash, Vice President for APAC and Japan at Qualys.

In modern IT/OT environments, security leaders must shift their focus from raw technical metrics, such as vulnerability counts and patch percentages, to measurable business outcomes. And as organizations scale AI and cloud deployments, security has to work as an automated, continuous guardrail rather than an operational bottleneck.

“The board does not really need a superhero who will promise them that I will stop every attack,” Jyotiprakash said. “It needs a strategic leader who can explain where the organization is the most exposed, how much risk that results in, and whether the organization can recover fast enough.”

In this video interview with CISONow, Jyotiprakash also discussed:

  • Moving from the “James Bond” security model to a strategic, business-focused framework;
  • Why CISOs must stop confusing technical activity with business risk reduction;
  • Enabling fast AI and cloud adoption through automated guardrails and continuous visibility, without creating shadow IT;
  • Evaluating vendor partnerships on complexity removed and risk eliminated, not feature lists.

Debasish Jyotiprakash is Vice President for Asia-Pacific and Japan at Qualys, where he helps enterprise security leaders streamline vulnerability management, risk prioritization and cloud security architecture. With extensive experience across global cybersecurity markets, he works with CISOs and executive boards to translate technical cyber risk into actionable business resilience.
